NC5 History

Established in 1974, NC5 began as a group of community college educators offering assistance to each other in the use of computers and their application to education.
Since its inception in 1974, NC5’s role has constantly changed to meet the needs of those we serve.
The original focus was on using minicomputers in education. By the late 1970’s, as personal computers became available and easier to use, meetings were dominated by presentations on how faculty were using these relatively inexpensive devices in their science labs and classrooms. This pioneering work by a group of far-sighted individuals thrust the Consortium colleges to the forefront of computer-enhanced instruction.
Over the past several years, Consortium colleges asked us to promote instruction of faculty and staff on computer use.
Now, as technology has become widely adopted in our colleges, the question becomes, ‘How do we use what we have to improve student learning?’ This question will be the focus of our meetings as we move forward into our fourth decade.
